Madeleine Albright died on Wednesday at the age of 84, prompting a flood of tributes and fond remembrances on social media, but also some harsh criticism over comments she made in 1996 about Iraqi children’s deaths.
During a 60 Minutes interview, Albright, the country’s first female secretary of state, made the remarks. Lesley Stahl spoke with the then-UN ambassador about how Iraq was suffering as a result of the sanctions imposed after the Gulf War in 1991.
“We’ve heard half a million [Iraqi] children have perished.” “I mean, that’s more kids than died in Hiroshima,” Stahl pointed out. “Is the price worth it?” says the narrator.
“I believe that is a difficult choice,” Albright responded, “but we believe the price is worth it.”
Clips of the segment were shared around on social media following the news of Albright’s passing.
