At the MLB trade deadline in 2022, the Los Angeles Angels started selling. One person who they allegedly considered selling was star two-way player Shohei Ohtani. They ultimately decided against it, but given that Ohtani trade rumors started to circulate at the deadline, it’s likely that they will try again in the upcoming offseason.
It appears that we may now understand the Angels’ decision not to trade Ohtani a little better. Given Ohtani’s unmatched success as a pitcher and hitter in the modern MLB era, it’s reasonable to assume he would fetch a sizable trade package.
In fact, opposition teams that contacted the Angels regarding Ohtani were surprised to learn just how much L.A. was seeking in exchange for Ohtani. After learning the asking price, the majority of teams turned away, which may make it challenging for any team to pursue a future trade for Ohtani. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal provided the following commentary on the Angels’ trade requests for Ohtani.
“Officials from two clubs interested in trading for Shohei Ohtani were left with the impression that they needed to make a first offer of six elite players, and ultimately probably more, in order to start the conversation. Even though the Angels made it clear that owner Arte Moreno was opposed to trading Ohtani, a deal seemed all but impossible until a few teams floated names. — Ken Rosenthal, The Athletic
It appears that the Angels wоn’t let Ohtani leave withоut receiving a sizable package in exchange. Despite his future in Lоs Angeles seems murky at best, but if he is traded, the Angels frоnt оffice will wоrk tо get the mоst mоney fоr him. Ohtani wоn’t be traded at the MLB trade deadline in 2022, but his situatiоn this оffseasоn will be an intriguing оne tо fоllоw.
