According to a local official in northeastern Ukraine, Russian forces attacked using deadly phosphorus bombs, which burn flesh and leave victims with serious injuries.
The claim was made in a Telegram post on Thursday by Dmytro Zhyvytskyi, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration in Ukraine, who claimed that the attack left a child hospitalized. Earlier, human rights organizations and other Ukrainian officials accused Russia of using weapons that were either illegal or outlawed. Russian forces have shifted their attention to Ukraine’s northeast and east, which coincides with Zhyvytskyi’s charge.
According to Zhyvytskyi, Russian forces on Thursday afternoon fired rockets at Yunakivka, a town in the Sumy administrative district of Ukraine that is close to the Russian border. Zhyvytskyi claimed that although there were no casualties, Russian forces used “phosphorus shells” that injured a child.
